“The Gospel” is a loaded phrase. Its meaning spans the ancient roman declaration of victory in battle to a religious path into eternal bliss. In this class we’ll consider the gospel in its historical context. Beginning with its use in roman rhetoric, we’ll gain perspective for its subversive use in the early Jesus movement. From there we’ll consider the evolution of "the gospel" during the reformation and into evangelicalism. This class will conclude by trying to reclaim the meaning of "the gospel” as the proclamation, not of religious imperialism but as the declaration of divine blessing, which is truly, good news for every person.
