Our Ethos

At Pearl Church, we cultivate rhythms that accord with Jesus’ ancient invitation to follow in his way of being. We embrace values embodied in the life of Jesus. And, we embody an ethos—what we might call the “personality” of Jesus. Ethos names the characteristic spirit of a culture. In naming our ethos, our desire is for each person who visits Pearl Church to feel this spirit in all that we do.

Collaborative

Jesus gathered a community of unlikely companions and shared his work and authority with them rather than reserving it for himself. We therefore carry a collaborative spirit—sharing leadership, welcoming many voices, and inviting the wisdom of the whole body, not just a few.

Cultivating

Jesus taught in parables of soil and seed, sun and season, pictures of patiently tending new life until it grew. We therefore carry a cultivating spirit—nurturing people, ideas, and community with patience, seeking wholeness rather than productivity, investing for the long term rather than forcing quick results.

Curious

Jesus asked questions more often than he answered them, and he met people's stories with genuine interest rather than assumption. We therefore carry a curious spirit—staying open to mystery, asking before assuming, and approaching one another and God with wonder rather than certainty.

Discerning

Jesus read the moment—knowing when to speak and when to withdraw, when to challenge and when to comfort. We therefore carry a discerning spirit—listening closely to the moment, weighing situations with wisdom, and understanding that each person’s life calls for a unique path.

Gentle

Jesus described himself as gentle and lowly of heart, and he handled the bruised and the fragile with tenderness. We therefore carry a gentle spirit—meeting one another with kindness and patience, especially in disagreement or pain.

Grounded

Jesus was gentle and curious, yet he never wavered in his commitment to the marginalized—even in the face of fierce opposition. We therefore carry a grounded spirit—open to change and new understanding, while staying firmly rooted in our values, especially equity and inclusion.

Transparent

Jesus carried out his life in the open, unafraid to be seen in weakness, grief, or uncertainty. We therefore carry a transparent spirit—being honest about our questions and limitations, and building trust through openness rather than pretense.
