Becca McMartin

Becca McMartin spent her childhood in Haiti, where her parents were missionaries. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Bible and Education and then spent the next eight years living in Eastern Europe caring for missionary kids and their families. In 2009, Becca moved to Portland to pursue her Master of Divinity degree, while continuing to travel and shepherd missionary kids around the world as part of Barnabas International. Finding a home at Pearl Church quickly become one of her favorite things about living in Portland. She joined Pearl’s pastoral staff in July 2015. Becca values thinking fiercely about theology and developmental theory as we shepherd our kids to deeply love and follow Jesus. She loves a new box of crayons, four part harmony, reading silly kids’ books, traveling by train, eating at food carts, and riding her bike all over Portland.

Mike Roth
Lead Pastor

Mike is a native of Portland who has been part of Pearl since its inception in 2001. He is passionate about shaping a thoughtful community of faith that’s animated by the story of scripture and the life of Jesus. Some of Mike’s values are story, intellectual honesty, a diverse community and perspective, and making space in relationship for curiosity, complexity, convictions, and mystery. He believes that these values contribute to an engaging community that nurtures our fullness as human beings. His hope for Pearl is that it would be an oasis for those seeking contemporary, cultural, and resonant meaning in the scriptures, Jesus, and Christian life together. As a supplemental resource to Mike’s work at Pearl, he hosts a website, which engages the generative movement that is re-membering Christianity.

Mike and Jen married in 1997 and they have three children. Besides spending time with his family, Mike enjoys reading, backpacking, and traveling. He holds a bachelors in Biblical Studies and Educational Ministries, a Master of Divinity, and a Doctor of Ministry in Homiletics, with a focus in biblical genres. He is an A.J. Gordon Guild Scholar and Ph.D. student in the field of Homiletics, specializing in biblical literary figures. An educational highlight took place in 2007 when Mike served as Haddon Robinson’s Sabbatical in-Preaching Mentor.

Brian Cheney

Brian grew up in Portola, California. He moved to Portland in 1998 for college, earning a Bachelor’s in Bible and Music Ministry. He has been a part of Pearl Church since 2002. Music has always been one of Brian’s main hobbies, and in recent years his interest has been growing in songwriting and in choral arranging. One of Brian’s favorite life experiences was a year that he spent living in Lima, Peru learning language and getting to know the culture. He has come to realize that if he weren’t so interested in music, he would have loved to have become a linguist.
