Pearl Church

Baptism is a sign of God’s grace—an indication that we have been marked by Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection and incorporated into his body.

It has many symbolic referents throughout Scripture: the waters of creation and the flood; circumcision; God’s deliverance of Israel through the Red Sea; death and resurrection. Baptism beautifully links us, therefore, to the goodness of God’s creation, to the grace of God’s covenant promises, and ultimately to Jesus Christ himself. There is profound mystery and power in this simple act.

Recognizing that our members come from many faith traditions, and desiring to live out what we understand from Scripture as practiced throughout Christian history, Pearl Church practices both infant and believers’ baptism. Infant baptism emphasizes our utter dependence upon God and our faith in God’s initiating love. It is an act of faith on the part of the family and the church and a corporate declaration that the child will be raised to know and follow after Jesus Christ. Believers’ baptism expresses our belief in and our call to respond to the transforming power of God’s grace. Thus both infant and believers’ baptism are acts of faith, rites of passage into a welcoming family, and signs of God’s boundless love and grace.
